August 2025 with Rep. Thompson

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Happy Back-to-School season! I want to wish students, parents, and teachers across our community a safe and wonderful new school year!

It's been a busy few months of the interim season as we've been working hard to prepare legislation for next year. Click here to see our August interim highlights, or highlights from previous months.

This month, we heard great news regarding some of the legislation we passed earlier this year.

Thanks to the efforts of the Fentanyl Task Force, as well as HB87, the state of Utah has seized 4.3 million units of fentanyl already in 2025. Deaths from drug overdoses are down compared to last year. It's great and encouraging to see that our bipartisan efforts are making a real impact to save Utah lives.

This year, Utah once again showed its ability to lead the nation. Our state was ranked third in the country for AI preparedness, proving that innovation and consumer privacy can thrive together.

Before its passage, the “One Big Beautiful Bill” contained a 10-year moratorium on state AI regulation. This section of the bill was very concerning to me, my colleagues, and many others around the country. I joined an effort to resist the addition of this moratorium to the bill. We lobbied DC, met with our federal delegation, and worked diligently to make sure that Utah’s voice was heard. As part of this effort, I published an op-ed in the Washington Times making our argument. You can read my op-ed here.
I had a great time attending the National State Legislatures Conference (NCSL) in Boston earlier this month! It was great to tour the city, spend time with my wife and my colleagues, and meet with representatives and senators from all over the country to share ideas on policy and legislation.

I especially loved the chance to share our Federalism Initiative. I'm excited for our upcoming summit in September to discuss these ideas further, reduce political friction and uncertainty, and work to rebalance the state-federal governing partnership.
As always, I appreciate your trust and support as I serve the people of Cache Valley in the Utah House. Don't hesitate to reach out to me with your questions, comments, and ideas. I love to hear from you!

Thank you

Jason Thompson
Representative, House District 3

I loved getting to visit the new Bees stadium with my colleagues!
The Boys and Girls Club means a lot to me personally, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help them raise money and give back in a fun way!
