June 2025 with Rep. Thompson
Part 2

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Throughout June, I saw a lot of movement on big issues we're facing in Utah. As part of our interim meetings, we covered healthcare costs, school safety, and wildfire preparedness.

On the Federalism Commission, we discussed public lands, HB488, and the new National Federalism Initiative.

I've also been writing op-eds on many different issues, from chronic absenteeism in Utah schools, to the need for us to reevaluate education and how we are preparing students with durable skills, to the AI moratorium proposed in the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act."

I'm excited about the work I am doing to advocate for the citizens of House District 3 and Utah as a whole. It is an honor to serve you.

America250 Utah

This week, Utah officially kicked off its celebration of America's 250th anniversary with a joyful community gathering at the Utah State Capitol. The event was hosted by Utah's own Marie Osmond, and marked the beginning of a yearlong celebration leading up to the nation's semi-quincentennial in 2026. I loved spending time with my fellow legislators, elected officials, and Utahns from all over the state as we remember the values that unite us, and Utah's unique role in America's ongoing story.

Check out america250.utah.gov for featured celebrations throughout our state! What a year of celebration we have ahead!

Federalism Highlights
During the June interim, the Federalism Commission discussed jurisdiction over public lands in Utah and explored what states can do to assert their authority and exercise their jurisdictional rights.

We also discussed the implementation of HB488 from the 2025 General Session and the work we've done on the National Federalism Initiative.

This bipartisan initiative will feature an annual summit, where elected officials from across the nation can convene to discuss federal-state disentanglement, and how we can return power to the people.

I'm excited about the work we're doing for Utah to lead the nation on this issue!
Chronic Absenteeism
This month, I continued my discussion on the issue of chronic absenteeism in our schools. This has quietly become one of Utah's most pressing education issues, affecting students at every age, from kindergarten to high school, especially in our city schools. In my recent op-ed, I outline why even a few missed days can lead to long-term academic struggles and increased risk of dropout. The data is clear: attendance matters more than most people realize.
As always, I appreciate your support and engagement. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out. You can also follow me on Facebook, Instagram, and X to stay updated on the work I'm doing.

Have a happy and safe July full of patriotic celebrations! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸŽ†
