Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I hope you're all doing well. I wanted to reach out to tell you about my upcoming events and give you a look at what I’ve been up to this month.

Black & White Days

In May, the city of Richmond wrapped up the 111th Annual Black and White Days. This festival is one of my favorite traditions in all of Cache Valley. I had a blast walking in the parade on Saturday, visiting with friends and neighbors, and celebrating the strong sense of community that makes Richmond such a special place. Events like Black & White Days are a great reminder of the values and traditions that bring Cache Valley together.

Interim Legislative Session

The 2026 Interim Legislative Session kicked off on May 19. I am a member of three Interim Committees: Education, Judiciary, Public Education Appropriations Subcommittee, and the Federalism Commission. It was great to reunite with my colleagues and continue our work of serving Utahns.

Our discussions ranged from improving campus safety at our universities, to managing Utah's relationship with the federal government, and addressing the inefficiencies of child welfare cases in the courts.

If you couldn't make it to these meetings, don't worry. Interim meetings occur on the third Wednesday of each month through the end of the year (excluding July and December). You can join us in-person or online, where you can access agendas, watch live streams, and submit public comment.

Primary Election

This is a reminder that ballots for the June 23rd Primary Election are arriving in mailboxes, and I want to encourage you to make a plan to vote. Each election gives us the chance to influence the direction of our communities, schools, public safety, and other issues that impact our everyday lives. When people vote, elected leaders are more accountable and better able to reflect the priorities of those they serve. As you receive your ballot, I hope you'll take the time to review the candidates and make your voice heard.

America 250 Events

As we commemorate America's 250th anniversary, there are several exciting events happening throughout Cache Valley this summer. We hope you'll join your neighbors in celebrating our nation's history, heritage, and future.

Op-Ed On Prediction Markets and Federalism

This past month, I wrote an op-ed on a constitutional question that has become increasingly important in modern governance: the balance of power between the federal government and the states.

My article examines the ongoing debate over the Supremacy Clause and argues that federal laws are only supreme when they are enacted within the constitutional powers delegated to the national government. Using the recent dispute over prediction markets as a case study, I explore how Washington has increasingly treated federal authority as virtually unlimited, often overlooking the Constitution's clear limits on national power. I believe that preserving our system of federalism is essential to protecting liberty, encouraging local self-government, and ensuring that power remains dispersed rather than concentrated in a single national authority.

I hope to connect with you sometime this summer. In the meantime, feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or ideas you'd like to share.

Best,

Jason Thompson
Representative, House District 3
